In 1840, there's work on the Florida Keys for honest salvagers (like the Claibornes) and outright pirates like King Cutler, who bribes sailors to cause wrecks. When Capt. Stuart's ship is wrecked, Loxi Claiborne rescues him, falls for him, and travels to Charleston to convince the owners the wreck wasn't his fault; company lawyer Steve Tolliver returns with them to Key West to investigate. Tolliver and Stuart's rivalry for Loxi's hand complicates their swashbuckling adventures in pursuit of Cutler, ending in a trial and a dangerous dive for evidence.

Produced and directed by the legendary Cecil B. DeMille. A rough and ready sea drama with great special effects. Salvagers compete for cargo ships sank in the reef off the coast of Georgia. Some of the ships that do not happen by nature but by man greedy. An extraordinary final with an attack of a giant squid. A Star Studded cast keeps the interest in this stormy and mobile movie. Notable cast: Raymond Massey, Paulette Goddard, Ray Milland, Susan Hayward, Robert Preston and a bland John Wayne. Yes, the "Duke" has an important role, but no owner or carry this movie. I have seen this at least six times since childhood and I think that it is still big. See for yourself.

I was eight years old when he first saw this movie on the big screen in 1942. It's my first film in color and the scenes with the giant octopus gave me nightmares for a long time afterwards. Today we still enjoy the movie for its beautiful color photography, sea scenes exciting and beautiful performances by Ray Milland and John Wayne. Wayne is unjustly accused of causing his boat from sinking profit. The story develops as it tries to clear his name. Paulette Goddard provides the love interest. The film never drags, either on land or at sea, where some of the most exciting action takes place.The underwater scenes, especially the final, are memorable. Supporting cast, score and special effects are all top notch.DeMille runs in his usual style showman. A good effort from all stakeholders.
